Victorian edition of Philip Van Artevelde by Sir Henry Taylor, published in London by C. Kegan Paul & Co. in 1880. Bound in rich oxblood (burgundy) full leather with extensive gilt tooling, this handsome volume features the arms and motto of the City of London School to the front board and a separate armorial crest with the Latin motto Sub Tegmine Fagi ("Beneath the Shade of a Beech Tree") to the rear board. The binding is enhanced by gilt-decorated boards and spine, marbled endpapers, and all page edges gilt. While no ownership inscription or bookplate is present, the combination of school and armorial devices suggests a presentation or prize-style binding associated with one of England's most prestigious historic schools. An attractive example of late Victorian bookbinding, ideal for collectors of antique books, educational history, heraldry, fine bindings, and City of London School memorabilia.
